Celebrating Earth Day: Sustainability Snapshot

earth day

At Day & Ross, sustainability isn’t just about a scorecard, it’s driven by our values and our commitment to bringing the best of our company to our customers and our communities.

This year, we’ve made great strides in leveraging technology to move more efficiently through our network. Investments in our core operating systems are enabling better traceability and route optimization, and we’re supporting our customers with shipmentlevel and networklevel emissions data to help them understand, manage, and reduce their own transportation footprint. We continue to partner with vendors to try new technology and evaluate solutions that are right for our fleet and facilities, like electric trucks and shunts.

This progress is reflected in the data – we’ve seen a 12.26% decrease in our total carbon footprint since 2021, and we’ve moved up in our ECOVADIS ranking from the 53rd percentile to 60th.

We continue to focus on three key pillars: equipping our fleet, facilities, and people with the tools and training we need to reduce our impact on the environment.

Equipping our fleet:

  • We have the largest Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) usage in Canada – and we’re leveraging TruckMate and AI to take us even further. This translates to over 20,000 miles/year, saving 70,000+ tons of CO2 since 2013.
  • Aerodynamic equipment has helped us double our fuel efficiency.
  • We’re increasing our use of renewable fuels from plant oils, waste fats, and agricultural byproducts. We source over 100,000 liters of renewable diesel annually for our operations in British Columbia and have plans to do the same in our Montreal and Greater Toronto Area markets.
  • In our broader fuel supply, we use more than 5,000,000 liters of renewable fuels each year.

Improving our facilities:

  • Nearly 20% of the energy at some of our largest terminals now comes from solar panels.
  • Over 60% of our forklift fleet is electric – boosting efficiency, longevity, and air quality for our teams.
  • We partner with local governments to ensure the infrastructure around our terminals accommodates LCVs on the road.

Training our people:

  • We believe safety is an enabler of sustainability and equip our teams with the training they need to do their job safely and sustainably. Safer driving means smoother driving, which lowers fuel usage.
  • We use foot pedal management, driver scorecards, and coaching support efficient, responsible driving.
  • Using AI pilots and tools like collision avoidance systems, we’re helping to reduce waste, emissions, and downtime.
